Hi guys, it’s Shannon once again! Perhaps you are like, “Man, Thursday. Why aren’t you Friday? WHY ARE YOU SO LAME, THURSDAY?!” Well, have I got a lame Thursday cure for YOU! It’s the covers for the ADVENTURE TIME comic’s spin-off mini-series, MARCELINE AND THE SCREAM QUEENS #2! Here, FOR THE FIRST TIME ANYWHERE! Featuring a Sleater-Kinney self-titled album tribute cover from JAB on the A cover, ADVENTURE TIME artist Shelli Paroline on B cover duty, the insanely talented Erica Henderson on cover C, and the AMAZING Jen Wang on the D cover!
The first issue of this six-issue mini-series is out this July, and will be written and drawn by Meredith “Super Keen” Gran! Don’t miss it, unless you want to be SUPER SAD.
I spent the morning un-following a bunch of very talented people on Tumblr.
That feels like a really weird thing to say. And it is.
It was nearly a dozen different artists in all, and they were all extremely talented. Part of what moved me to Follow them in the first place was their skill. In…
I agree with this so much. I watch many different people of varying skill level and focus, but the defining thread is that they produce original work and have original stories in their heads. I like young artists a lot for this reason; sometimes the stories aren’t the best but the feeling and brain power behind them is there.
Fanartists can do incredible work too, but as a consumer of art it’s as significant as the difference between eating a meal and eating someone else’s vomit.
So fanart is vomit? Jesus christ. Is that necessary? I have a lot of respect for you but this really sours that. You can word your opinion in a way that doesn’t just shit all over others.
Maybe if people showed the slightest interest in any original art I’d done ever in the degree they fall over my fanart, I’d give a shit about sharing my original art. If people value original art so much as to call derivative art vomit, why doesn’t that value show at all???
People don’t share their art online like it’s a business, especially on Tumblr. You’re not a “consumer”. They don’t owe you anything. They share fanart because it’s what they have fun with and they enjoy being a part of a community that cares about it. Let them draw whatever they want and what makes them happy and if you don’t like it, then fine, don’t watch them! Who cares, honestly. Geez.
At the risk of getting my head lopped off, I’m going to stick my neck out here.
I agree with aterriblethought. There seems to be a disturbing trend of big-time artists shitting on fanartists or casual artists. My only question is: why does it matter to you? Does so-and-so drawing Sherlock slash art on Tumblr really effect you in any way, besides being annoying on your dash? You don’t like it, unfollow them. There’s honestly no need to write big, involved essays about why those people are lesser artists and not worthy of your attention - and on Tumblr of all places. Seriously? This is as casual as blogging gets. Most people (myself included) got Tumblrs just so they would have a place to dump fanart so it wouldn’t flood our main sites.
It doesn’t make you seem bigger or more important to call fanart “social waste” and “vomit.” It just makes you look like the jerk standing at the party screaming “STOP HAVING FUN.” Which, bee tea dubs, is the reason people draw fanart. Because it’s fun. And more often than not, being bitter and spiteful about it is only alienating people that would otherwise be fans of your work.
There is no automatic demotion for artists who dare to draw copyrighted material. People are going to draw whatever they want. Getting worked up over it not being up to your standards is a waste of energy.
To get it out of the way: Nobody called Fanart “social waste.” That is the name of the blog! :)
If you don’t want to sell your fanart and are doing it because it is fun and you like the attention, then keep doing it! It’s your time and energy, use it however you want! But some people will have opinions about that, just as people have opinions about everything.
But if you are selling and making a living off of fanart not only is that super unethical but it is illegal! Don’t do it! If you want to make a living off of your art, do original stuff. That is my opinion.
I am just going to leave this here:
(Another interesting take on fanart)
